Still, Louise is a film still from the video work Sunk Cost Landscapes (2026), in which queer performance artist Louise de Venecia Gile (SE/PH) is both within the camera’s field of view and in control of the drone filming her.
In the photograph, the relationship between the observer and the observed is unsettled. Drawing on bell hooks’ concept of the oppositional gaze, the work explores the gaze as a position from which power can be negotiated: Louise is both the subject and co-creator of her own image.
